Welcome to the website of San Francisco DJ Jeff Stallings. I currently hold two residencies: On the Below Zero weekly chillout internet radio show, and at the California Academy of Sciences' weekly NightLife event.
I am now an official Apple iTunes Podcast broacaster, so please subscribe to download my newest mixed sets. Be sure to check out the new image Jim Winters created for my corresponding podcast playlists site.
A special thanks to everyone who attended my fifth gig at the California Academy of Sciences' NightLife on May 13, and to the amazing folks from Rock the Bike, who powered the sound stage via pedal power. I am now one of three resident DJs for this weekly event and will be playing again on August 5. I have also played San Francisco's Harlot, Mezzanine, Club 1015, Swig and the Slanted Door, as well as various venues in Los Angeles.
The terms applied to the tracks I mix in clubs and at events—Balearic beat, chillout, down-tempo, nu-jazz and electronic lounge on the slower side; chillhouse, deep house and intelligent drum and bass (IDB) on the faster side—encompass a wide range of tempos and sounds. Click on MUSIC to listen to some recent mixes and for more information about my Podcasts.
Finally, be sure to check out my recent review of the new JetTricks album, All One Word on the Below Zero website.
Music has always been in my blood and an important part of my life. My parents sent me to a piano teacher when, at only 6 years old, I could pick out tunes by ear on our old upright. But I quickly tired of the regimentation of formal instruction and moved on to other interests.
During the 1980s I started going to clubs in New York where the hardcore dancers arrived late to hear the sexy atmospheric grooves that DJs played well after sunrise. It was awe-inspiring to hear these often ethereal and always sexy songs mixed flawlessly on vinyl by extraordinarily talented DJs.
My interest in this “chillout” music bloomed in 2000 when a friend gave me a copy of a CD put out by Buddha-Bar in Paris, a club acclaimed for cutting edge grooves in a sophisticated atmosphere. I was hooked and started collecting this genre of music from all over the world.
I now have thousands of tracks that range from smooth down-tempo (80-110 beats per minute, or BPM) to a still smooth but energetic 140 BPM (what I call "chillhouse"). I can play entire sets of Latin-infused chill; darker, more soulful chill; faster, definitely danceable chill; happy-people party chill; and anything in between.
Some of my favorite artists include Urban Myth Club, Goloka, Alpha X, Ganga, Late Night Sneaky, Tosca, Cantoma, Chris Coco, Afterlife, Blank & Jones, Bliss, De-Phazz, Gotan Project, Radar, Schiller, Slackwax, Thievery Corporation, Waldeck and Zero 7. These groups define the contemporary down-tempo sound; I encourage you to buy some of their CDs.
In March of 2008 I was selected to be a resident DJ on the renown Below Zero downtempo radio show. I am fortunate to work with some of the best chillout DJs in the industry as well as with Julian Lennon, who selects our Pick of the Week. Be sure to download a podcast of our new show each Sunday evening.
Every Thursday, the amazing new California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park is transformed into a lively venue filled with music, provocative science, mingling and cocktails for visitors 21 and older. I am one of three resident DJs for the NightLife event. Click on EVENTS above for my next date at the Academy.
